European Steel Exports in the 1q19
European steel exports in March rose 0.1 Mt year-on-year to 1.9 Mt, according to the European Steel Association, Eurofer. At 5.1 Mt, total steel shipments in the 1q19 dropped marginally on the same period last year.
Japan’s GDP Grows in the 1q19
Japan’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2.1% year-on-year in the 1q19, the country’s Cabinet Office reports. However, exports, capital spending and private consumption all contracted during the same period.

Chinese Steel Exports by Destination in the 1q19
The 1.9 Mt year-on-year increase in Chinese steel exports in the 1q19 to 17.0 Mt featured a rise in shipments to the Middle East (+0.6 Mt to 2.1 Mt), while exports to the Americas (+0.3 Mt to 2.2 Mt) and Europe (+0.2 Mt to 1.0 Mt) also edged up on the year.
Chinese Alumina Production Jumps in April
China’s alumina output in April grew to its highest level since June 2017, up 4.2% year-on-year to 6.3 Mt, according to reports by Reuters. Production in the year to date totalled 24.5 Mt.
Turkish Crude Steel Output in April
After 11 successive months of annual decline, Turkish crude steel production rose by 2.6% year-on-year in April to 3.0 Mt, according to the Turkish Steel Producers’ Association. However, at 12.5 Mt, output in January-April was down 10.5% on the same period in 2018.
