Chinese Trade Data

Coal, Iron Ore, Steel

Chinese iron ore imports fell 4% year-on-year in April and were largely unchanged from the previous month at 80.2 Mt, according to preliminary data from China Customs. Imports for the period Jan-Apr were up 1% on the same period in 2014 at 307.2 Mt. In contrast, Chinese steel exports continued to perform strongly in April, rising 13% year-on-year to a three-month high of 8.5 Mt, although, they were below the levels seen at the end of 2014. Steel exports in Jan-Apr were up 33% on the same period in 2014 at 44.3 Mt. Chinese coal imports (incl. lignite) fell 28% year-on-year to 19.6 Mt in April, however this was still a four-month high, reflecting the recent weakness in imported coal volumes. Coke exports for the Jan-Apr were up 25% on the same period in 2014 at 3.0 Mt.
