US and Australian Coal Exports Fall
Coal exports from the state of Queensland fell 5% year-on-year in April, to 16.3 Mt, according to port authority data reported by SteelFirst. Meanwhile, coal exports from the Carrington and Kooragang terminals at the Port of Newcastle in New South Wales fell 30% in April, to 6.4 Mt, according to Port Waratah Coal Services. Coal movements at the terminals were disrupted by stormy weather and flooding during April. The US exported 19.3 Mt of coal in the 1q15 (excl. cargoes to Canada), down 21% year-on-year, according to official data. Coking coal exports were down 20% on the 1q14 at 12.0 Mt, the lowest quarterly total for coking coal exports since the 4q10, while there was a sharper fall, of 22%, in steam coal exports to 7.3 Mt.
