US Coal Exports at 21-Month High in December
US coal exports (excl. shipments to Canada) rose sharply to a 21-month high of 6.7 Mt in December, up 2.9 Mt year-on-year, according to the country’s National Mining Association. There was strong annual growth in exports of both steam (+1.4 Mt to 2.9 Mt) and coking coal (+1.5 to 3.8 Mt), however both remain well below their peaks, achieved in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Despite this strong end to the year, sharply lower exports in earlier months meant US exports of all coal in 2016 were down by 11.7 Mt year-on-year at 49.9 Mt.
