US Coal Exports Surge
US coal exports (excl. shipments to Canada) rose sharply to an 18-month high of 5.4 Mt in November, up 1.6 Mt year-on-year, according to the US National Mining Association. At 3.0 Mt coking coal shipments were up by 0.7 Mt, while there was a 0.9 Mt increase in steam coal exports to 2.4 Mt. Nevertheless, despite stronger shipments in November, weak volumes earlier in the year meant exports in January-November were still down by 14.5 Mt on the same eleven months in 2015 at 43.2 Mt.
