Australian Iron Ore and Coal Exports in May

Australian iron ore exports climbed to a year-to-date high of 75.4 Mt in May (wet basis), up by 4.0 Mt year-on-year, Australian Bureau of Statistics data show. At 349.9 Mt, exports in the first five months of the year were 13.0 Mt higher than the same period in 2016.
After a weak month in April, when shipments were disrupted by Cyclone Debbie, Australian coking coal exports rebounded to 10.9 Mt in May. Nevertheless, shipments were still down by 5.9 Mt year-on-year, contributing to an annual decline of 16.2 Mt in cargoes in the first five months of the year to 60.1 Mt. By contrast, steam coal exports edged up by 0.3 Mt to 16.4 Mt in May. January-May exports were slightly higher than the corresponding total of 2016 at 80.6 Mt.
