Of the 539.5 Mt of iron ore China imported in the 1h17, 332.4 Mt was sourced from Australia, up by 8% year-on-year, which included an all-time high for monthly shipments in June of 61.0 Mt, customs data show. There was growth of 7% in Chinese imports of Brazilian iron ore over the same period to 109.3 Mt. Meanwhile, increased domestic iron ore production supported growth of 151% in 1h17 imports of Indian iron ore to 18.9 Mt. Shipments from Iran (+57% to 10.4 Mt) and West Africa (+28% to 8.0 Mt) also rose strongly.
Meanwhile, Chinese imports of Australian coal increased by 24% year-on-year in the 1h17 to 38.5 Mt driven by shipments of steam coal and anthracite. A monthly record of 3.7 Mt in June helped lift China’s imports of Mongolian coal (an overland trade) by 80% over the same period to 18.6 Mt. China imported 95.2 Mt of coal (excl. lignite) in the 1h17.
