Taiwanese Coal Imports Surge

Taiwan’s coal imports climbed to the highest level in over four years in May at 7.3 Mt, up by 1.3 Mt year-on-year, according to IHS Energy. There was strong annual growth in shipments from Indonesia (+0.6 Mt to 2.2 Mt) and imports from the US climbed to the highest monthly level in over a decade at 0.3 Mt. Taiwan imported 29.6 Mt of coal in the first five months of 2017, up by 2.8 Mt on the same period in 2016.
