Japan’s iron ore imports increased by 4.3% year-on-year in May to 10.7 Mt, according to the country’s Ministry of Finance. By contrast, coal imports fell by 6.0% over the same period to 14.5 Mt.
Meanwhile, Japanese crude steel production was flat year-on-year in May at 9.0 Mt, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation reports. However, modest increases in previous months meant output in January-May was up by 1.5% on the same five months last year at 43.9 Mt. The country’s steel exports fell by 12.6% year-on-year in May to 3.2 Mt.
