Coal

US coal exports (excluding cargoes to Canada) rose by 2.5 Mt year-on-year to 6.3 Mt in April, shipments have now risen on an annual basis for six consecutive months, according to the country’s National Mining Association. Coking coal exports climbed to the highest level in over two years in April at 4.0 Mt, up 1.2 Mt, while steam coal shipments increased by 1.3 Mt to 2.3 Mt, but retreated from last month’s 3.5 Mt.

By contrast, following a sharp annual decline in shipments to Asia, Colombian steam coal exports dropped to the lowest level in over a year in April at 6.7 Mt, IHS Energy reports. Nevertheless, at 0.9 Mt, Colombian exports to Asia were still a five-month high and there were year-on-year increases of 0.2 Mt and 0.4 Mt in shipments to Europe and the Americas to 3.5 Mt and 2.3 Mt, respectively.
