Diverging Trends in Turkey’s Coal Imports
Turkish coal imports were almost unchanged from the year-ago level in March at 3.3 Mt, according to IHS Energy. However, this total hid sharply divergent trend for coking and steam coal shipments. Imports of steam coal (incl. anthracite) rose to a four-month high of 3.1 Mt, up by 0.4 Mt year-on-year, as shipments from Colombia climbed to a monthly record of 1.8 Mt. By contrast, coking coal imports slumped to the lowest level since July 2015 at just 0.2 Mt, down by 0.4 Mt year-on-year. Turkey imported 9.0 Mt of all coal types in the 1q17, up slightly on the 1q16.
