Japanese Steel and Coal Trade
At 3.0 Mt Japan’s steel exports fell to the lowest level since January 2012 in April, down by 7.4% year-on-year, as shipments to markets in Asia declined, official data show. Japan exported 12.9 Mt of steel to all destinations in January-April, down by 5.6% on the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Japanese coal imports dropped to a 12-month low of 13.7 Mt in April, although a very weak month for imports in April 2016 meant this was still up by 5.4% year-on-year. Despite this, at 62.6 Mt, imports in the first four months of the year were still up slightly on January-April 2016.
