Japanese iron ore imports slipped to 10.2 Mt in October, down by 0.8% year-on-year and the fifth consecutive month of annual decline, the country’s Ministry of Finance reports. At 104.1 Mt, imports in the first ten months of the year were down by 4.5% on the same period in 2016, reflecting slowing output in the country’s steel sector. Japanese steel exports fell by 10.4% in October to 3.0 Mt.
Meanwhile, Japan imported 15.9 Mt of coal in October, up from September but still down by 7.2% year-on-year. Nevertheless, at 158.0 Mt, coal imports in January-October were still up by 0.7% on the same ten months last year.
