More Chinese Provinces Join Anti-Pollution Drive
A further three Chinese provinces, Sichuan, Jilin and Henan, have announced plans to combat air pollution over the winter months, IHS Energy reports. Measures announced include, requiring industrial firms to reduce or stop output during periods of high air pollution, halting use of smaller coal-fired boilers and penalising heavy polluters by forcing them to halt activities altogether during winter. This follows the announcement of similar plans for Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Tianjin provinces. Industrial activity is currently being restricted in Hebei in response to a wave of smog in the region, with steel output reportedly down sharply.
