Of the 88.7 Mt of iron ore China imported in August, 22.5 Mt was from Brazil, up sharply by 5.0 Mt year-on-year to the highest level since December 2015, customs data show. There was also an annual rise of 0.4 Mt in shipments from South Africa, at 3.7 Mt. By contrast, imports from Australia fell by 2.6 Mt year-on-year to 52.9 Mt. Meanwhile, as the monsoon slowed mining and shipping, Chinese imports of Indian iron ore remained at a low level of 0.9 Mt, although edging higher from July’s 19-month low of 0.6 Mt.
