Coal, Iron Ore
Australian iron ore exports slipped to a five-month low of 68.2 Mt (wet basis) in July, down by 0.7 Mt year-on-year, Australian Bureau of Statistics data show. However, strong growth earlier in the year meant exports in January-July were still up by 10.9 Mt on the same period in 2016 at 488.1 Mt.
By contrast, following a sharp increase in steam coal shipments (+1.0 Mt to 19.0 Mt), Australian coal exports climbed to a 2017 high of 33.5 Mt in July, up 1.2 Mt year-on-year. Nevertheless, at 210.8 Mt exports of all coal types in the first seven months of the year were down by 11.6 Mt.
