South African Coal, Iron Ore and Manganese Ore Exports in 2q20

Total South African steam coal (including anthracite) exports dropped to 17.0 Mt in the 2q20 from 20.8 Mt during the same period last year, customs data show. Shipments to India in the 2q20 plunged to just a 33.6% share of overall exports from 63.1% in the 2q19.

Meanwhile, iron ore shipments fell to 13.1 Mt in April-June (-2.9 Mt on the year), the lowest since 3q11.

The country’s manganese ore exports declined to 3.5 Mt in the 2q20, the lowest since 3q16 and down from 5.0 Mt in the same months of 2019.
