South African Coal, Iron Ore and Manganese Ore Exports in May

Total South African coal exports rebounded from a near nine-year low of just 4.0 Mt in April to 6.7 Mt in May, the second highest level in 2020-to-date. However, shipments still eased by 0.1 Mt year-on-year, according to data gathered by IHS.

Meanwhile, seaborne South African iron ore exports fell for a third month in a row, down by 1.3 Mt year-on-year to an eight-month low of 3.9 Mt, customs data show. Loadings bound for China decreased to 2.7 Mt from 3.2 Mt in both May 2019 and April 2020.

Seaborne manganese ore shipments more than trebled from a recent low in April to 1.4 Mt in May (-0.4 Mt on the year).
