Global Crude Steel Output Drops in April

Global crude steel production declined by 13.1% year-on-year to 137.1 Mt in April, the lowest since February 2018, according to the World Steel Association. Output in the world outside China tumbled by 28.5% to 52.1 Mt, the steepest fall since June 2009.

Production from India plummeted to 3.1 Mt (-65.2%) amid coronavirus-related lockdown measures, while output from the EU and US dropped to 10.7 Mt (-22.9%) and 5.0 Mt (-32.5%), respectively.

Meanwhile, as China emerges from the pandemic, the country’s crude steel production inched up by 0.2% on the year to 85.0 Mt in April, an eight-month high.
