Australian Coal Exports Fall in September

Australian coking coal exports eased 0.3 Mt year-on-year to 14.6 Mt in September, according to IHS. However, shipments edged up from 13.9 Mt in August. Exports to China were down to 1.9 Mt in September from 4.1 Mt in the same month of 2019 amid looming Chinese import quotas and reports of restrictions on Australian coal. However, Australian coking coal exports to India grew to nearly 5 Mt, up 2.1 Mt. Total coking coal shipments in the first nine months of 2020 dropped 10.7 Mt to 127.7 Mt. The country’s steam coal exports tumbled to 14.7 Mt in September (-2.4 Mt) and 149.1 Mt in the year to date (-8.1 Mt).
