Energy companies have been forced to begin shutting-in offshore oil platforms in the US Gulf Coast ahead of Tropical Storm Delta, which is forecast to develop into a major hurricane before making landfall later this week, Reuters report. This will potentially be the 10th named storm to make landfall in the US this year, the most since 1916, adding further disruption to offshore production in the US Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for around 17% of total US crude oil production.
