Global Crude Steel Output Edges Higher in September

Coal, Steel

Marking a second consecutive month of annual gains, global crude steel production rose nearly 3% to 156.4 Mt in September, data from the World Steel Association (worldsteel) reveal.

Strong output in China supported upward momentum, with Chinese production climbing 10.9% to 92.6 Mt. This implies that Chinese daily production hit a record high in September. More recently, China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) data indicate that output has held strong with member mills’ crude steel production steady in mid-October at 2.17 Mt/day.

However, output in the rest of the world excluding China fell 6.8% to 63.8 Mt in September, according to worldsteel. After marginally rising in August, Indian production declined 2.9% to 8.5 Mt, while annual falls in the EU slowed to 14.0% with output at a six-month high of 11.1 Mt.

Elsewhere, South Korean production rose 2.1% to 5.8 Mt, a year to date high. Moreover, growth was posted in Turkey and Russia for a fourth and second month in a row, respectively.
