Japanese Iron Ore and Coal Imports Drop in August

Japanese iron ore imports declined 25.1% year-on-year to 7.3 Mt in August, according to provisional data from the country’s finance ministry. However, the annual fall slowed from a 43.3% drop in July. Nonetheless, weaker imports in each month, except for April, brought year-to-date receipts down 20.1% to 63.6 Mt.
Meanwhile, Japan’s total coal imports tumbled to 13.0 Mt last month (-16.5%), with imports in the first eight months of 2020 falling 5.9% to 115.5 Mt.
