According to customs data, total South African steam coal exports (including anthracite) rose 1.5 Mt year-on-year to 6.3 Mt in July – marking the first annual gain since January. Shipments were flat on the month, with exports in the first seven months of the year falling to 41.7 Mt from just under 45.0 Mt in the same period of 2019.

Meanwhile, the country’s iron ore exports eased 0.8 Mt to 5.2 Mt in July, bringing year-to-date loadings down 3.3 Mt to 36.4 Mt.

South African manganese ore shipments inched up 0.1 Mt on the year to 2.1 Mt in July, the highest since at least January 2010. However, year-to-date exports were just under 10.0 Mt down from 11.7 Mt in January-July 2019.
