Vietnamese March Coal Imports Fall as Production Rises

Coal

A rise in domestic Vietnamese coal production put pressure on imports to the country in the first three months of this year, according to official data and reports from IHS Markit.

For March, imports were down 11% on the year, totalling 3.9 Mt compared with 4.5 Mt a year earlier.

Total coal imports in the first quarter hit 8.7 Mt, down 18% from the 10.8 Mt imported in the same period last year.

Part of this fall in volumes was attributed to a rise in domestic production, which came close to reaching 5 Mt in March, a 5% year-on-year rise in production according to IHS citing data from the country’s General Statistics Office (GSO).
