Coal
South Korean steam coal imports (including anthracite) tumbled 2.3 Mt year-on-year to 6.8 Mt in January, the lowest monthly level since May 2009, IHS data show. The fall was driven by annual declines in shipments from both Australia (-0.5 Mt to 4.0 Mt) and Indonesia (-1.0 Mt to 1.4 Mt).
Meanwhile, coking coal imports retreated by 0.3 Mt year-on-year to 1.6 Mt. Inbound shipments from Australia fell by 0.4 Mt to 0.8 Mt, while there were also moderate declines in imports from the US and Russia. Shipments from Canada rose to 0.4 Mt, up 0.3 Mt on-the-year.
