The US exported 6.4 Mt of steam and coking coal to all destinations excluding Canada in May, up from 3.9 Mt in the same month last year, data released by the US National Mining Association show.

Steam coal exports rose to 3.4 Mt, more than double the 1.5 Mt exported in the same month last year, with India the largest recipient at 1.5 Mt.

Coking coal exports meanwhile hit 3.0 Mt, up from 2.4 Mt in the same month last year with Europe accounting for most shipments.

Total coal exports from the US in January-May stand at 30.5 Mt, up from 26.5 Mt a year earlier.
