Japan Coal Imports by Source

Japan’s combined coking and steam coal imports (including anthracite) rose to 13.7 Mt in May, with Australia remaining the primary source for both, data from IHS showed.
Of the 10.2 Mt of steam coal imported, 6.4 Mt was source from Australia, up from 5.4 Mt in the same month last year and far higher than the second-largest supplier Indonesia at 1.5 Mt, which saw shipments fall by 0.4 Mt year-on-year.
Japan imported 3.5 Mt of coking coal in May with 2.5 Mt sourced from Australia, up by 0.5 Mt year-on-year, with the remainder coming from Canada, Russia, the US.
