In April, China imported 3.5 Mt of coking coal versus 6.3 Mt a year earlier amid a continued absence of Australian volumes, IHS data show. In April 2020, China imported 4.5 Mt of coking coal from Australia.

However, for April this year imports of Mongolian coking coal from overland routes dipped to a 13-month low of 0.6 Mt with imports of Canadian coking coal halving from March’s total to land at 0.6 Mt.

This paved the way for an increase in supply from the US and Russia, with imports of US coking coal reaching close to 1.0 Mt for the first time since June 2012, and shipments from Russia hitting 0.8 Mt, a five-month high.
