Indonesia was the largest source of China’s steam coal imports (including anthracite and lignite) in August, with volumes reaching 17.1 Mt, up by 9.9 Mt year-on-year, data from IHS show.
After Indonesia, Russia was the next largest source at 4.2 Mt, up from 2.1 Mt a year earlier. Imports from Colombia and South Africa both reached 0.5 Mt in August.
Meanwhile, the largest supplier of coking coal to China in August was the US at 1.2 Mt, a record high and up from less than 0.1 Mt a year ago. Russian volumes climbed close to 1.2 Mt, up from 0.5 Mt last August, with overland shipments of Mongolian coking coal at 1.1 Mt, down 2.0 Mt.
China reported no Australian coal imports for a ninth consecutive month in August.
