Coal stocks held by Indian power plants had fallen to just five days’ of supply (9.6 Mt) as of 20 September, according to data from 136 plants monitored by the country’s Central Electricity Authority, with stock levels at 100 plants judged to be “critical”/”super critical”.

Although there is usually a downturn in stocks over this period as the monsoon come to an end, this compares with 19 days’ supply at the same point last year and 11 days in 2019.
