Japan imported 7.6 Mt of steam coal (including anthracite) from Australia in August, a seven-month high and up from 5.3 Mt in the same month last year, data from the Japanese Ministry of Finance show.
After Australia, countries from the FSU, principally Russia, were the next largest source of Japan’s imports for the month at 1.3 Mt, followed by Indonesia on just under 1.0 Mt.
For coking coal, Australia was also the largest supplier in August with volumes registered at 2.7 Mt, a seven-month low but up from 2.2 Mt a year earlier. A further 0.7 Mt of coking coal was imported from the US.
