Global Steel Production

Global crude steel production reached 155.0 Mt in January, down 6.1% year-on-year, according to World Steel Association data.

The fall is largely the result of a further slowdown in Chinese output which declined by 11.2% to 81.7 Mt, according to worldsteel estimates (official Chinese production data will not be released until March). This slowdown has continued into February with daily crude steel output at China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) member mills falling 12.8% to 1.9 Mt in the period 1-10 February, according to the industry association.

Contractions were also recorded in EU steel output in January (-6.8% to 11.5 Mt) and Japan (-2.1% to 7.8 Mt). In contrast, India recorded its highest monthly total of 10.8 Mt, up 4.7%, and US output grew by 4.2% to 7.3 Mt.
