Increase in US Coal Exports

A sharp increase in shipments to Asia saw US coal exports jump 14.6 Mt higher year-on-year in 2021 to 73.0 Mt (excluding cargoes to Canada), data from the country’s National Mining Association show, although still below the pre-pandemic 79.5 Mt achieved in 2019. At 38.6 Mt, exports to Asia reached a new high last year. Coking coal shipments to all destinations increased by 3.2 Mt to 38.0 Mt, while steam coal exports rose by 11.5 Mt to 35.0 Mt, a three-year high.
