Indian coal imports edged up by 1.5 Mt year-on-year in 2021 to 219.8 Mt as coking coal imports increased by 14.9 Mt to 71.8 Mt on strong growth in cargoes from Australia, according to IHS data. By contrast, steam coal imports (including anthracite) dropped by 13.4 Mt to 147.9 Mt as cargoes from Indonesia fell sharply. The pace of shipments slowed sharply towards the end of the year with December an 18-month low for imports of all coal types.
