South Korea imported 131.0 Mt of coal in 2021, up by 7.5 Mt on the previous year, according to IHS data. This increase was primarily due to a 7.3 Mt rise in imports of steam coal (including anthracite) to 109.5 Mt. By comparison, coking coal imports climbed by just 0.3 Mt to 21.5 Mt.

Imports of Australian coal jumped by 16.7 Mt to a new high of 64.1 Mt while, by contrast, shipments from Indonesia dropped by 4.0 Mt to a fifteen-year low of 20.9 Mt.
