Chinese Coal Imports by Source
Chinese imports of Russian coking coal climbed to a monthly record of 1.7 Mt in May, up 0.7 Mt year-on-year, making it the country’s second largest supplier after Mongolia. By contrast, US cargoes fell by 0.6 Mt to 0.1 Mt, according to McCloskey data.
Imports of steam coal (including lignite and anthracite) from Russia rose to a six-month high of 3.3 Mt, although still 0.7 Mt below the year-ago level. Indonesia remained China’s largest supplier of steam coal in May at 12.2 Mt, down 1.1 Mt.
China imported a total 20.5 Mt of coal in May, down 0.5 Mt from the same month last year.
