South Africa exported 5.2 Mt of steam coal in January, up 1.5 Mt from the same month a year before, according to customs data. Annual growth was driven by a 1.5 Mt increase in shipments to India to 2.6 Mt.

However, exports of iron ore from South Africa fell 0.3 Mt year-on-year to 4.4 Mt in January as higher shipments to Asian destinations were countered by a fall in cargoes to Europe.

Meanwhile, exports of manganese and chrome ore increased by 0.2 Mt year-on-year to a combined 2.7 Mt in January.
