South African seaborne coal exports rose by 1.4 Mt from the same period last year to 16.9 Mt in the 1q22 however, March recorded a 0.3 Mt decline from the same month last year to 5.9 Mt, according to official data. Nevertheless, shipments to Europe in March were the highest since 2018 at 0.9 Mt.

In contrast, exports of iron ore jumped 0.7 Mt to 6.3 Mt in March, the highest monthly exports for over two-years. Shipments to Asia and Europe rose 0.5 Mt and 0.3 Mt to a respective 5.5 Mt and 1.8 Mt.

Exports of manganese ore increased 0.3 Mt year-on-year to 2.0 Mt in March, while shipments of chromium ore rose 0.8 Mt.
