Richards Bay Coal Terminal Throughput
Coal
South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) exports fell 14% year-on-year to 50.4 Mt in 2022 and the lowest since 1993, McCloskey reports citing terminal data. Shipments from RBCT were restricted by problems with the railing of cargoes to the port, including cable thefts, labour strikes, derailments and locomotive issues. There was also a redirection in shipments away from Asia to European destinations. In 2023, RBCT hopes to raise exports by 19% to 60 Mt. The terminal’s nameplate capacity is 91 Mtpa.
